Our All That Glows exhibit represents what holiday lighting and decorations were like for people living in North America, but what about other cultures? For example, how about The Philippines? Check out our very mini-exhibit downstairs in the conference room!
When the Spanish missionaries arrived in 16th century, they brought along the Roman Catholicism with them. Ever since the Spanish colonized The Philippine Archipelago and recognized Christianity as the state religion, Christmas became a huge part of the country. Believe it or not, the Christmas season starts in the -ber months - meaning that Christmas decorations and the holiday spirit starts in September as September 16th marks 100 days until Christmas.
What is the most iconic decoration?
The “parol”, a Tagalog word taken from the Spanish word “farol” meaning lantern, is the most symbolic Christmas decoration in The Philippines. These star-shape lanterns are illuminated and are hung in the windows of Filipino household during the holiday season.
One of our crafts in the conference room is to decorate a star to hand up on our tree! Here are some examples of what our visitors made!
Our All That Glows exhibit runs until January 8, 2022. We are open from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays! Come drop by!
